Google GDrive Testing Discovered

By: Andy Beal

You'd think that if Google really wanted to keep the testing of its "GDrive" a secret, it wouldn't make it so darn easy to find.

Here's how easy it was for Corsin Camichel to find it...

Okay, Writely accepts new users, no big deal here. And because I am a very interested person, I wanted to know on which system (programming language) it now runs. So I started to append index.jsp, index.py and so on at the URL. But when I entered index.html [GDrive shows up]

Wow, and this people is the company we trust to keep our Gmail information safe? They must have wanted someone to discover it.

Anyway, if this is legit, here's what we can expect to get with GDrive (code named Platypus)...

* Backup. If you lose your computer, grab a new one and reinstall Platypus. Your files will be on your new machine in minutes.

* Sync. Keep all your machines synchronized, even if they run different operating systems.

* VPN-less access. Not at a Google computer? View your files on the web at http://troutboard.com/p.

* Collaborate. Create shared spaces to which multiple Googlers can write.

* Disconnected access. On the plane? VPN broken? All your files are still accessible.

Meanwhile Philipp Lenssen follows a trail that leads us to believe Platypus/GDrive is not a prank. According to a blog entry two years ago by Google employee David Braginsky...

So a lot has happened in the last three months. I bought a condo, got two kitties (Oreo and Kit), got a roomate Huy, became a techlead of project Platypus at Google, and met a crazy girl with multiple personalities named Cybil.

So form an orderly line for your GDrive invite. If grown men can line-up for hours ahead of the release of a new Star Wars movie, us geeks can take a ticket for what will likely be a limited release of GDrive. ;-)
