It's a new year and a new law suit for Google. This time, the world's largest search engine is joined by Apple and Napster.

Google, Apple, and Napster face allegations of patent infringement from online movie distributor Intertainer Inc.

"Intertainer, claiming it has suffered irreparable harm, asked the court for cash compensation and an order to prevent the companies from using its technology."

Intertainer's patent was issued in August 2005 and covers a "digital entertainment service platform". According to their web site, Intertainer counts Intel, Comcast and NBC among its investors, and this is not the first time the company has taken on the big guys.

In September 2002

"Intertainer, filed an anti-trust suit against three major entertainment companies, AOL Time Warner, Vivendi Universal and Sony and their wholly owned service, Movielink in the United States District Court for the Central District of California, Western Division, accusing them of conspiracy to fix prices in the digital distribution of entertainment and restraint of trade."

They finally settled out of court in March 2006, so I guess they're ready for their next battle.

Stay tuned to see if the courts deem this frivolous or with merit.
